Hastings Valley Migration

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council

A project to commission a community history to research all waves of migration and settlement to the mid-north coast with an interest in labour and family history. The history will record the distinctive histories and ethnic profiles of towns including Port Macquarie, Taree, Kempsey, South West Rocks, Wingham, Wauchope and Laurieton over time. The history will research first European settlement to the present. It will encompass Anglo migrations (with reference to particular diaspora) and contact history with Aboriginal Australians, including the shared labour histories on farms and in local industries.

Families Of Fortune

Tweed River Regional Museum, Chinese-Australian Historical Society

Highly Commended 2010 National Trust Heritage Awards. A wave of Chinese migration to the Tweed began in the late 19th century and the newcomers quickly established themselves as market gardeners, banana growers, cooks, herbalists and shopkeepers. All these are recorded through personal stories, photos and historical information in ‘Families of Fortune – Chinese People In The Tweed’.

Fairfield – Evolution Of A Migrant City

Fairfield City Museum And Gallery

A heritage study documenting how waves of migration have formed a diverse community in Fairfield with a shared identity and a sense of place. It is not well known that over 130 nationalities live in the Fairfield Local Government Area and over three quarters of all residents have overseas ancestry. Fairfield is one of the most culturally diverse areas in Australia.

Half A World Away

Orange City Council

Highly Commended 2008 National Trust Heritage Awards. Following the Second World War, migrants from Europe made their home in Orange. Many worked in the Email whitegoods factory and some were housed in the ‘tent city’ next door.

The Forgotten Children

Fairbridge Heritage Association

The Fairbridge organisation operated a Farm School for underprivileged British child migrants near Molong from 1938 until 1974. About 1000 boys and girls passed through and were trained as “farmers and farmers’ wives”.

From Estonia To Thirlmere

Wollondilly Heritage Centre

In the 1930s, a small group of Estonians set up poultry farms near Thirlmere which survive today and are now surrounded by some 60 farms. Many of the farmers and labourers are former post-Second World War migrants from Estonia.

Fishing practices and experiences enable people to recall the past of their homeland or childhood through the fishing skills they learned from older generations. These memories, and the adaptation of skills to a new land, mean that there is a strong heritage element to what we may sometimes consider a recreational pastime.

Lives Lost, Life Regained

Read the memoirs of ageing Holocaust survivors in ‘Lives Lost, Life Regained’ an anthology researched through the Sydney Jewish Museum’s ‘Community Stories’ program supporting the wishes of ageing Holocaust survivors who would like their life story to be written. For most of these Jewish migrants, English is not their first language.
